Submitted by matt on Tue, 10/16/2007 - 4:02pm.The White House is threatening to veto any energy bill that seeks to raise taxes on oil companies.
President Bush's senior advisers will recommend he veto any energy bill that raises taxes or uses the tax code to "single out specific industries," Allan Hubbard, director of the National Economic Council, said in a letter sent late Monday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Reacting to Hubbard's letter today, House Democrats vowed not to back down, paving the way for a confrontation over energy policy this fall.
Bush nominates ex-judge as Attorney General
Submitted by admin on Thu, 09/20/2007 - 1:06pm.US President George W Bush on Monday named retired federal court judge Michael Mukasey as his pick for Attorney General.
If approved by the opposition Democrat-controlled Senate, Mukasey would replace Alberto Gonzales in the top job at the US Justice Department.
Gonzalez officially stepped down on Friday, though he announced his resignation in August after months of controversies including political motives in the firing of nine US attorneys, the veracity of Gonzeles' testimony to Congress and his work on torture policies as a White House lawyer before becoming Attorney General.
After peak oil: Will America survive?
Submitted by matt on Thu, 07/26/2007 - 3:20pm.What happens when the oil runs out?
That depends on whether the nation is prepared to operate without combustion engines. If the people have mostly switched over to electric vehicles, then operating an economy without oil isn't difficult. Sure, other forms of transportation still need oil, but the greatest consumption of oil is found in automobiles.
Just What the Founders Feared: An Imperial President Goes to War
Submitted by matt on Tue, 07/24/2007 - 12:49pm.The founders would have been astonished by President Bush’s assertion that Congress should simply write him blank checks for war. They gave Congress the power of the purse so it would have leverage to force the president to execute their laws properly. Madison described Congress’s control over spending as “the most complete and effectual weapon with which any constitution can arm the immediate representatives of the people, for obtaining a redress of every grievance, and for carrying into effect every just and salutary measure.”
You Tube debates proved to be interesting, but not revolutionary.
Submitted by matt on Tue, 07/24/2007 - 11:05am.But that was not the fault of You Tube or CNN, but that of the candidates. The debate even started not with a question, but with a request , for the candidates to please try to answer the question. As usual, the candidates did their best to twist the answers to the questions into what they wanted to say, into the usual sound bite they always spew.

Capitulation, from A------ to Z
Submitted by Wojtek on Tue, 05/22/2007 - 12:55pm.Are you a fine upstanding member of the Undocumented-American community? That's to say, are you (if you'll forgive the expression) an illegal immigrant?
Great news! Being illegal is now perfectly legal! Just for being one of the circa 12 million people who shouldn't be here, you can now be here indefinitely! If you were living and working in America illegally before Jan. 1, 2007, you're now entitled to one of the new Z-1 "probationary" visas. And your parents and spouses are entitled to one of the new Z-2 visas, and your children to the new Z-3 visas...
